Phase 3 construction of the new high school is currently underway. This phase includes construction of the Athletic wing with a 16,000 square foot gymnasium and two alternate Physical Education spaces, a Black Box theater for performing arts classes and an outdoor amphitheater. The new wing will also include Arlington Community Education office space and program spaces for the Special Education LABBB Collaborative program that serves Lexington, Arlington, Burlington, Bedford, Belmont and Watertown.
At the AHS Building Committee meeting on February 6, the project team informed the Committee that the Phase 3 schedule will shift from the end of December 2024 to February 2025. Due to the slight delay of the Phase 2 opening, the beginning of Phase 3 was delayed and the project team is unable to make up the time lost. The new timeline avoids disruption to students by moving into the new spaces over February vacation.
With the opening of Phase 2 in November 2023, three-quarters of the new high school is now complete. The Phase 3 schedule adjustment does not impact teaching and learning and there is no cost associated with the schedule change. Winter athletics programs will continue to use the current spaces until Phase 3 is completed.
The estimated completion date for Phase 4 remains as September 2025. Phase 4 entails final site work and the construction of two additional multi-use, synthetic turf athletic fields, plus landscaping and a connection to the Minuteman Bikeway.
