Phase 2 Buildings Scheduled to Open to Students in early November
Phase 2 construction of the new high school is nearly complete and includes the Humanities Classroom Wing, Student Center (aka central spine), Library, Cafeteria, Exterior Learning Courtyard, District Offices and Menotomy Preschool.
After careful review of the Phase 2 schedule, the project team determined that the planned turnover date of October 11, 2023 was no longer feasible. At the September 5th AHS Building Committee meeting, the project team informed the Committee that the new turnover date will be October 30, 2023. As previously determined, Menotomy Preschool will be turned over to the district in December 2023 and will open to students in January 2024.
Phase 2 has always been the largest and most complex of the four-phase project. The schedule adjustment stems from weather delays incurred over the winter. The construction team has been working overtime, including extended hours, Saturdays and holidays during the entire phase, but those efforts are not enough to recover the lost work days from last winter. There is no additional cost to the Town for the slight delay in the schedule.
Teaching and learning are not impacted by the schedule adjustment since parts of the old school are still available for use (a decision made by the AHS Building Committee in October 2022). The schedules for Phase 3 and Phase 4 are not affected. Students and teachers are expected to begin moving into the Phase 2 spaces during the first full week of November. Details will be forthcoming.
Phase 3 will commence immediately following the completion of Phase 2. This final phase of building construction will include the athletic wing, black box theater and outdoor amphitheater and is expected to be completed in December 2024. Phase 4 entails final site work and the construction of two additional multi-use, synthetic turf athletic fields, plus landscaping and a connection to the Minuteman Bikeway and is expected to be completed in September 2025.
The Building Committee looks forward to hosting public tours of the new Phase 2 spaces in early 2024, once the Menotomy Preschool is open. For more information on the AHS Building Project, visit ahsbuilding.org.
